Baltimore, Maryland — Over the holiday weekend, crews continued making steady progress on the demolition of the former Francis Scott Key Bridge, even as high winds kept the drone grounded and prevented aerial updates. Project officials have also released two significant developments regarding the reconstruction effort.

Timeline shifted from 2028 to 2030

Officials confirmed that the original completion target — “late 2028” — has now been adjusted to late 2030. While the timeline extension reflects the massive technical and engineering challenges involved, it also underscores the project’s commitment to safety and precision.

They also reported a sharp increase in projected costs, noting that these numbers remain estimates only, and should not be interpreted as the final cost of the rebuild.

A major milestone: first permanent production piles delivered

In more encouraging news, the first production/permanent piles for the new bridge have officially arrived on-site. It’s a noteworthy milestone and a testament to the immense behind-the-scenes effort that has unfolded in less than two years since the project became necessary.

Looking ahead, officials say 2026 will offer plenty to see for infrastructure and bridge-engineering enthusiasts as large-scale construction ramps up.

A historic rebuild closely monitored nationwide

The Francis Scott Key Bridge reconstruction continues to be one of the most closely watched infrastructure projects in the United States, with transparency, safety and long-term durability at the forefront of every phase.
