A commercial vehicle enforcement blitz in Northwestern Ontario revealed widespread safety concerns, with nearly half of all semi trucks inspected being placed out of service, authorities confirmed.
The crackdown took place on November 11th and 12th in Kenora and Rush Bay, Ontario, where the Ontario Provincial Police (Kenora detachment) partnered with the Ministry of Transportation (MTO)to conduct a total of 47 Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) inspections.
The results highlight significant non-compliance within the sector:
• 20 commercial vehicles were placed out of service;
• 26 warnings were issued;
• 43 violations were identified.
In a statement, the OPP emphasized the importance of collaborative enforcement:
“This joint enforcement initiative highlights the continued collaboration between the OPP and MTO to enhance commercial motor vehicle safety, improve road safety, and ensure regulatory compliance. A strong balance of education and enforcement was achieved, and collectively, these agencies remain committed to reducing collisions and deterring unsafe vehicle operation.”
The findings underscore ongoing concerns around illegal trucking operations and mechanical or regulatory deficiencies in commercial vehicles operating across Ontario’s highways.
