The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has released the results of Brake Safety Week 2025, held from August 24 to 30, during which 15,175 commercial motor vehicle inspections were conducted across 52 jurisdictions in North America.

The findings show that 84.9% of the vehicles inspected had no out-of-service brake violations. However, 2,296 vehicles (15.1%) were placed out of service for brake-related issues serious enough to render them unsafe for operation.

The most common cause for out-of-service designation was when 20% or more of a vehicle’s service brakes were defective — a violation found in 1,199 cases (52.2%).

Results by Country:

United States: 13,700 inspections, 2,035 violations (14.9%)

Canada: 1,459 inspections, 260 violations (17.8%)

Mexico: 16 inspections, 1 violation (6.3%)

This year’s focus was on drums and rotors, with inspectors identifying 113 violations, including 39 vehicles placed out of service. Additionally, 15 states used Performance-Based Brake Testers (PBBT) — out of 528 tested vehicles, 25 (4.7%) failed to meet the minimum 43.5% braking efficiency and were taken out of service.

Brake Safety Week is part of Operation Airbrake, a joint initiative of CVSA, FMCSA, and CCMTA, aimed at reducing brake-related crashes through inspections, education, and enforcement.

Next year’s Brake Safety Week will take place August 23–29, 2026.
