The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) has expressed its readiness to collaborate with Prime Minister Mark Carney and his new cabinet on key federal priorities outlined in the PM’s mandate letter released this week.

In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Carney, CTA noted that many of his goals align with those of the trucking sector — from eliminating interprovincial trade barriers and reviving a stagnant economy, to immigration reform, border security, and navigating the complexities of a new trade agreement with the U.S. amid a potential trade war.

CTA also raised concern over the underground economy’s growing grip on the trucking industry, compounding the impact of broader economic instability.

“CTA and our industry continue to be a steadfast partner during times of crisis. But now is the time to be proactive, forward-thinking, and innovative,” wrote CTA president Stephen Laskowski.

The Alliance stated it is willing to work closely with the Department of Finance and Canada Revenue Agency to address tax issues plaguing the sector. The industry continues to suffer from tax evasion through misused personal services business (PSB) models and a moratorium on T4A enforcement.

Among other priorities discussed:

Interprovincial Trade Barriers: Trucking was identified as the test sector for barrier removal. CTA urges the new cabinet to expand and accelerate this initiative.

Border Security: CTA supports pilot projects using AI to optimize border resource allocation and secure freight movement.

Immigration and Known Employer Program: While immigration levels are being reduced, the need for international long-haul drivers remains. A mandatory Known Employer Program is essential to prevent worker exploitation.

US Trade Deal: With the 2026 CUSMA review approaching, CTA is ready to collaborate on trade and border planning efforts to protect Canadian interests.
