Montreal, June 6, 2025 – On May 23, 2025, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers at the Montreal Marine and Rail Service intercepted and seized 577.43 kg of suspected cannabis hidden in a container bound for export to the Netherlands.

During the inspection, officers uncovered the contraband concealed in 1,023 vacuum-sealed packages hidden inside custom-built compartments, surrounded by engineered wood panels. The estimated value of the seizure exceeds $4.2 million CAD.

The CBSA reminds the public that while cannabis is legal and regulated in Canada, importing or exporting it without a permit or exemption authorized by Health Canada is a serious criminal offense that can lead to arrest and prosecution.

Official Statements

“This operation strikes a significant blow to transnational trafficking networks. I commend the CBSA officers whose vigilance—supported by advanced technology and targeted intelligence—helps ensure Canada’s safety and prosperity,” said the Honourable Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Public Safety.

Eric Lapierre, Regional Director General for the CBSA in Quebec, added: “This seizure is another demonstration of our commitment to disrupting criminal activity and protecting our communities. Our message is clear: Canada will not tolerate any attempts to undermine the integrity and security of its borders.”
