MONTREAL – In July 2025, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers intercepted 95 stolen vehicles at Montreal’s marine and rail facilities, with an estimated total value of nearly $7.3 million. The vehicles were turned over to police for further investigation.
The CBSA plays a crucial role in combating vehicle theft in Canada by supporting law enforcement in disrupting, investigating, and prosecuting auto theft-related crimes. While police across the country lead the investigations, the CBSA acts on 100% of referrals to stop stolen vehicles from leaving Canada’s borders.
This cooperation relies on police providing timely intelligence, swiftly taking possession of recovered vehicles, and pursuing prosecutions to address vehicle theft at its source. The CBSA also conducts its own searches based on internal intelligence.

Export examinations fall under the CBSA’s export control mandate. Officers in local export units perform daily audits of export declarations and may select containers for further inspection at docks or warehouses. Police officers may also conduct enforcement operations at the Port upon presentation of a warrant.
