Mattice-Val Côté, Ontario – May 20, 2025 — A 27-year-old commercial driver from Brampton and a Mississauga-based trucking company are facing multiple charges after a serious wheel separation incident occurred on Highway 11 near Mattice-Val Côté.
At around 5:30 p.m. on May 12, an officer from the Ontario Provincial Police’s James Bay detachment was on patrol when they witnessed a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) lose two wheels, which flew across the highway. The officer initiated a traffic stop and quickly put out a small fire that had started as a result.
An investigation revealed that the passenger-side front axle hub on the trailer had experienced a complete mechanical failure, leading to the fire and wheel separation.
The driver was charged with:
• Operating a CMV with a major defect in a drawn vehicle
• Failing to accurately complete a daily inspection report
• Wheel separation – commercial motor vehicle
• Driving a CMV with a detached part
• No name displayed on CMV
The vehicle’s owner, a corporation based in Mississauga, was charged with:
• Wheel separation – commercial motor vehicle
• Driving a CMV with a detached part
• Failing to ensure performance standards are met
The OPP reminds all commercial operators to carry out thorough daily inspections and fix safety defects without delay. Wheel separations and mechanical issues pose major threats to public safety.
