Cross-border truck freight volumes continued to fall in May, dropping nearly 5% year-over-year, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). This marks the second consecutive monthly decline, following April’s sharpest drop since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Businesses are scaling back cross-border shipments as they await greater clarity on shifting trade policies and tariff structures. The prevailing uncertainty is pushing many to take a cautious approach to international logistics.
Since October 2020, North American truck freight had only declined in four separate months. However, three of those dips have occurred recently — between December 2023 and June 2024 — signaling increasing instability in the freight market.
