Montreal — The U.S. government’s decision to suspend work visas for some foreign truck drivers has sparked concern north of the border. The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) issued a statement Friday urging Ottawa to treat this development as a wake-up call to review Canada’s own system.

On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that Washington would pause the issuance of visas for certain foreign drivers. He argued on X that “the increasing number of foreign drivers operating large tractor-trailer trucks on U.S. roads is endangering American lives and undercutting the livelihoods of American truckers.”
The CTA stressed that although these restrictions do not directly affect visas currently used in Canada, the government must act quickly to address immigration-related issues within the trucking sector.
“Canada must view this as a wakeup call. If we fail to clean up the issues in our system, we risk facing similar restrictions in the future,” the Alliance warned.
