Washington, May 30, 2025 — The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has officially scheduled Brake Safety Week for August 24–30, 2025. During this initiative, law enforcement agencies across Canada, the United States, and Mexico will conduct targeted inspections of commercial motor vehicles to spotlight brake system performance and improve road safety.

Certified CVSA inspectors will perform thorough brake system checks, with a specific focus this year on brake drums and rotors. These components are critical to braking efficiency, and issues such as cracks, over-wear, or structural damage can severely impact a vehicle’s stopping capability. In some cases, broken fragments may detach and cause harm to nearby vehicles or motorists.

Vehicles found with out-of-service brake violations—or other major safety defects—will be immediately sidelined until the issues are resolved. Some jurisdictions will also deploy Performance-Based Brake Testers (PBBT) to assess actual braking capabilities.

In addition to inspections, Brake Safety Week serves as a platform for awareness campaigns aimed at educating drivers, carriers, mechanics, and owner-operators on the importance of routine brake maintenance and safe operating practices.

Collected inspection data will be submitted to CVSA, with results expected to be made public later this year. In 2024, over 12% of inspected vehicles were placed out of service due to brake-related violations.
