OTTAWA — Transport Canada has issued an urgent safety notice following reports of three fires and one overheating incident involving LionC electric school buses over the past year. The most recent event occurred on September 9, 2025.

While the exact cause remains under investigation due to extensive fire damage, no confirmed safety defect has yet been identified. A full investigation is ongoing.

Manufacturer Lion Electric released a preventive inspection bulletin on September 11, 2025, outlining step-by-step guidance. The bulletin has been distributed to all LionC bus owners in Canada and the U.S.

Transport Canada’s Recommendations:

For Fleet Operators:

Immediately inspect all LionC buses using the manufacturer’s bulletin.

Keep inspection records and report any concerns to both Lion Electric and Transport Canada via their defect hotline: 1-800-333-0510.

For Bus Drivers:

• If smoke or a burning smell is detected, pull over safely, evacuate the bus, and if it’s safe, disconnect both high-voltage and 12-volt power.

For Schools and School Boards:

Review fire evacuation procedures and emergency exit locations with students and staff. Emergency preparedness can save lives.

Transport Canada will continue its investigation and provide public updates as new information becomes available.
