Irving Oil has announced a $100-million private investment to upgrade the Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit (FCCU) at its Saint John refinery — a critical asset in operation since 1960.

The FCCU Revamp Project will focus on enhancing performance, efficiency, and reliability of the unit, which produces gasoline and diesel for markets across Atlantic Canada and the U.S. Northeast. The project will engage approximately 675 skilled workers, primarily from New Brunswick and surrounding provinces.

“This essential investment secures energy supply across the regions we serve while honouring our past and building for the future,” says Jeff Matthews, President & CEO of Irving Oil.

The phased work, to be completed over the summer and fall, is expected to generate $3.5 million in economic spinoffs and create the equivalent of more than 140 annualized jobs. Local sectors such as accommodations, restaurants, recreation and retail will benefit from the influx of skilled trades.

“We’re proud to support this important project, which keeps our tradespeople working and contributes to Saint John’s long-term prosperity,” says Derek McGraw, Director of Operations at Lorneville Mechanical Contractors.

This investment highlights Irving Oil’s continued leadership in Canada’s energy sector while reinforcing its commitment to regional growth and security of supply.
