The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has broken ground on a major expansion of JFK International Airport’s Truck Parking Plaza. The project is designed to meet rising air cargo demand and reduce illegal truck parking on southeast Queens streets.

The expansion will add 100 new parking spaces, tripling current capacity. It involves demolishing Building 110, a former food preparation facility, to make room for the expanded lot. The project will also feature modern restrooms, food concessions, and 35 electric vehicle charging stations, offering drivers enhanced amenities. Completion is expected by the third quarter of 2026.
Beyond logistics, the initiative promises community and environmental benefits, including improved traffic flow, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and less waste.

In 2024, JFK handled 1.67 million tons of cargo, a 5% increase over 2023. The parking expansion is part of JFK’s $20 billion modernization program, which also includes the recent opening of a $270 million cargo handling facility.
Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton called the project “a win for the airport, a win for the community, and a win for the drivers who keep our region moving.” U.S. Representative Gregory Meeks noted it addresses long-standing community concerns while boosting cargo efficiency.
