Construction has officially begun on the replacement of Highway 401 overpasses in Oshawa — a key step toward a future expansion of the highway to 10 lanes. This major infrastructure project is part of the Ontario government’s $28 billion investment to tackle gridlock, strengthen the economy, and build a more resilient transportation network across the province.

The current work includes replacing aging bridge structures, a move that will not only improve safety and traffic flow in the short term but also lay the groundwork for increased capacity in the years to come. The project is also expected to support hundreds of construction jobs in the region.

“This is about building a stronger Ontario,” said a government spokesperson. “We are creating jobs, improving commutes, and setting the foundation for long-term economic growth.”

Highway 401 is one of the busiest transportation corridors in North America, and these upgrades are considered vital for both local commuters and commercial traffic. With population and freight volumes continuing to rise, the expansion to 10 lanes is seen as a necessary evolution to meet the province’s mobility needs.
