A routine traffic stop on Interstate 70 turned into a massive drug bust after authorities uncovered over 3,000 pounds of marijuana and 260 pounds of cocaine hidden inside a semi-truck trailer.
The bust was part of a coordinated multi-agency criminal enforcement operation aimed at disrupting drug trafficking along the I-70 corridor. The initiative took place over June 1 and 2, targeting criminal networks using Kansas highways to transport narcotics.
According to the Geary County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO), deputies stopped the commercial vehicle near mile marker 302 for traffic infractions. Suspicious behavior prompted the use of a K-9 unit, which indicated the presence of narcotics. A probable cause search led to the discovery of the illegal cargo, with an estimated street value of $4 million.

Two California men, Yonas Tsegay, 33, and Samson Haliab, 31, were arrested and are each being held on $500,000 bond. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is now assisting in the investigation.
“This operation is a powerful example of what law enforcement can accomplish when we work together across jurisdictional lines,” said Sheriff Nate Boeckman. “The commitment and coordination of all agencies involved was key to this success.”
