A new Michigan bill, HB4522, would prohibit large trucks from using the far-left lane on freeways with three or more lanes, except when preparing to exit. In two-lane construction zones, trucks would be required to remain in the rightmost lane.
The measure is designed to improve traffic flow and safety across roughly 320 miles of Michigan roadways.
The proposal has sparked mixed reactions within the trucking community.

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) opposes truck-specific restrictions, citing enforcement challenges, potential increases in crashes, and uneven pavement wear. Meanwhile, the Michigan Trucking Association (MTA) supports the bill, arguing it could help maintain smoother and safer traffic patterns.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has not yet taken a stance.
The legislation now heads to the Senate Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for further review.
