August 28, 2025 — Between June 9-13, Canadian and U.S. enforcement officers carried out a large-scale enforcement blitz targeting vehicles transporting hazardous materials/dangerous goods (HM/DG). In total, 4,629 inspections were conducted under the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) unannounced initiative.

The findings were significant: while 831 vehicles earned a CVSA decal for having no critical violations, inspectors also uncovered 1,169 violations. Of these, 598 (51%) were classified as out-of-service, requiring the trucks to be taken off the road until the issues were corrected.

Forty-five jurisdictions participated in the blitz — including 10 Canadian provinces and 35 U.S. states. Inspectors examined non-bulk packages, cargo tanks, and other large containment units, checking for leaks, unsecured cargo, missing paperwork, improper placarding, labeling, or packaging.

Transporting HM/DG requires strict compliance, rigorous training, and continuous monitoring. Officials emphasize that the safety of drivers, the public, and the environment depends on meeting these standards. The 2025 blitz highlights both the ongoing risks and the critical importance of enforcement in North America’s hazardous materials transport sector.
