Baltimore, Maryland — New footage from this past weekend offers a closer look at ongoing operations at the Francis Scott Key Bridge site on Baltimore’s I-695 Beltway, where the first major demolition work is now in full swing toward constructing the new Outer Harbor Crossing.
Crews have removed the old concrete deck from the remaining spans and are currently taking down steel girders from the Hawkins Point approach. This removal phase represents the critical first step in clearing the area for a larger influx of heavy equipment and materials, as well as improving harbor navigation for commercial and recreational vessels.
The new bridge is slated for completion by late 2028, an undeniably aggressive timeline for such a massive and unplanned project. Despite online criticism about delays, industry professionals emphasize that large-scale infrastructure undertakings like this typically require years of coordination among contractors, engineers, and suppliers.
As project observer Dan noted, “To see tangible progress on site already is nothing short of remarkable given all the challenges and moving parts involved.”
