Elgin County, Ontario — What began as a routine traffic stop quickly escalated after Elgin OPP officers pulled over a commercial truck on Talbot Line last week. The driver was clocked at 29 km/h over the posted 80 km/h limit, travelling at highway speeds in an agricultural corridor known for sudden hazards.

But it wasn’t the speeding alone that raised red flags.

Officers inspecting the cab discovered that the passenger-side window was completely blocked by a full-sized fridge and a desktop printer, both strapped into the cabin in a makeshift setup. With no ability to see out the right side of the vehicle, the driver would have been unable to detect merging traffic, pedestrians, or obstacles.

Elgin OPP emphasized that commercial drivers must maintain unobstructed visibility at all times, noting that a truck’s blind spots are already significant without additional hazards created from inside the cab.

The driver was charged with speeding and failing to maintain clear side visibility, and the incident serves as a reminder that improper cargo placement inside the cab can be just as dangerous as unsecured loads on the trailer.
