A transport truck attempting to cross the border last month accidentally drove onto the unfinished Gordie Howe International Bridge from the U.S. side, Canadian border authorities confirmed on October 22.
The incident occurred on September 29, when the truck driver—intending to reach the Ambassador Bridge—mistakenly entered the Gordie Howe project site. Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers stopped the vehicle before it reached the Canadian port of entry.

According to CBSA spokesperson Luke Reimer, “multiple security barriers, including extensive fencing, are in place to prevent accidental crossings.” No injuries were reported, and officers did not draw their weapons.
The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) said the project area maintains a secure perimeter staffed around the clock. Site security assisted the confused driver in turning around, though the truck was eventually intercepted and redirected by Canadian officials.
Construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge is nearing completion, but its official opening has been delayed until early 2026 to allow for final testing and operational readiness. Once open, it will connect Detroit, Michigan, to Windsor, Ontario, easing congestion and strengthening trade links between Canada and the United States.
