Ottawa, ON — July 3, 2025 — Trucking HR Canada’s latest labour market report reveals that truck driver shortages are stabilizing, returning to pre-COVID levels after several years of increased demand.

In Q1 2025, there were just over 13,900 vacant driver positions across Canada — 5.3% lower than pre-pandemic levels, when the annual average hovered around 14,700 (2015–2019). In truck transportation, job vacancies in 2024 were 3.9% lower than before COVID-19.
“Even with the decline, the trucking industry’s vacancy rate is still 1.5 times higher than the Canadian average,” says Craig Faucette, Chief Program Officer at Trucking HR Canada.
More highlights from the report include:
• The Q1 2025 vacancy rate for truck drivers was 3.5%, down from 4.6% in Q1 2024.
• Vacancies in the truck transportation sector dropped 23% year-over-year.
• The overall job vacancy rate in Q1 2025 was 4.1%, compared to 5.3% the previous year.
While demand may be easing, employers in trucking may still face recruitment challenges.
