A disturbing discovery shocked Utah authorities Wednesday evening on northbound I-15 in Utah County. Two young girls were found locked inside a refrigerated trailer following a multi-vehicle crash that left several injured, including one critically.

The truck, driven by 28-year-old Jacob Ortell Scott, lost a tire while traveling north. The tire bounced over the median and struck two vehicles, causing minor injuries. As the tractor-trailer came to a stop, a chain-reaction crash followed, involving a semi-truck and several passenger cars.

While investigating the scene, a Utah Highway Patrol trooper noticed “two sets of eyes” inside the refrigerated trailer. When questioned, Scott admitted there were children inside. Troopers opened the trailer and found the girls trapped, with no way to escape. The thermostat was set to 30°F (around -1°C), with readings dipping as low as 29.5°F.

Authorities confirmed the children had been inside the trailer since leaving Huntington, Utah, and were en route to Salt Lake City. Scott was arrested and booked on suspicion of third-degree felony aggravated child abuse. The girls are now under the care of child protection services.
